View Full Version : Your August Mix Tapes

I don't know about most of you, but every month I put together a new mix tape. It is about the time to begin again, so I figured I would poll what music you throwing down on yours. It can be old, new, borrowed, or blue.

I would include my list here, but I have not finished it yet (tomorrow it shall arrive). It appears we need a new topic to play with over the next few days.

Well, if you are gonna go metal/Hard stuff:

Start off with some RATM - The Ghost of Tom Joad, Bullet In The Head, and Guerrilla Radio
Disturbed - Down With The Sickness, Forsaken, and Shout
NIN - Closer
Filter - Hey Man Nice Shot
Ministry - Tonight We Murder
Grave Diggaz - 1-800-SUICIDE
The finish it off with some more Rage - Testify, Bombtrack, Take The Power Back, Know Your Enemy, and Fistful of Steel

Stick some movie dialogue in there somewhere, you know, just to provide transitions or something. Your call on the movie.

Ok then...this should be appropriate:

[Nigel is playing a soft piece on the piano]
Marty DiBergi: It's very pretty.
Nigel Tufnel: You know, just simple lines intertwining, you know, very much like - I'm really influenced by Mozart and Bach, and it's sort of in between those, really. It's like a Mach piece, really. It's sort of -
Marty DiBergi: What do you call this?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, this piece is called "Lick My Love Pump."

at this rate I've got like around 40 mix tapes in progress, but to pick one, I've got one that so far includes:

"Christmas Song", Dave Matthews Band
"Kite", U2
"The General", Dispatch
"Pebbles and Marbles", Phish
"If I Could Give All My Love (Richard Manuel Is Dead", Counting Crows
"Sorry So Sorry", Howie Day
"Unwell", Matchbox Twenty
"Anyway", O.A.R.
"Amsterdam", Guster

Good show Urban Spaceman! I have not heard the song by Dispatch. Will check that out.

[Asked by a reporter if this is the end of Spinal Tap]
David St. Hubbins: Well, I don't really think that the end can be assessed as of itself as being the end because what does the end feel like? It's like saying when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say, if the universe is indeed infinite, then how - what does that mean? How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it, and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's the end, you know, is my question to you.

Grazi/Thanks Zen, and just to add another set I'm working on:

"Where Is My Mind?", The Pixies
"Say It Aint So" Weezer
"Where Did It All Go Wrong?", Oasis
"Kite", U2
"The General", Dispatch
"Times Like These", Foo Fighters
"Dosed", Red Hot Chili Peppers
"Creatures (For A While)", 311
"Just Because", Jane's Addiction
"Stacy's Mom", Fountains of Wayne

and yeah, Dispatch is definatly worth checking out --- same jam style like DMB, Blues Traveler, and O.A.R. to name a few.

Zens_7s

Hmmmm...Hung Up On You by Fountains of Wayne is on my mix tape this month. Cool.

311, eh? I have not picked up a disc of theirs since college. Maybe need to revisit. The song 8:16 AM from Grassroots was practically a theme song back then.

I just drug out an old mix tape I had, and Oasis' "Take Me Away" was on there. Every once in a while, they really hit it right. I love the line "I'd like to be under the sea, but I'd problem need a phone". Makes me laugh.

And of course, mighty, mighty props to the Foos. Doesn't "All My Life" just make you want to do something drastic like yell out your car windows at nothing? Ok, maybe it's just me.

I usually chose themes for my mix tapes. I've done one for each day of the week. But my favorite wav to put at the end of it is a Simpsons quote from the Stonecutter's epsiode. "Now let's get drunk and play ping pong!"

Do you really make 'tapes'? I didn't think people still made 'tapes'. You're making CD's aren't you? You just haven't updated your lingo, kind of like the people who still say "SCHWING" when a hot girl walks by.

I have to say there would be at least one song from Blur's new album Think Tank. The Replacements as well. I'll start there and build off of it.

I haven't made a mix CD since June /forums/images/icons/shocked.gif I'm behind!

I dunno, when was the last time you went to the "CD store?" I most often hear "record store," myself, though most of them aren't selling records anymore.

Also, I think you'd be surprised how many people still make tapes.

It's just a term that sticks I suppose; when an artist comes out with new material, I usually say they're putting out a new album instead of a new cd. Heck, there's even a show called Mixtape Mixdown on the Fuse TV channel.

Not to wander back on topic or anything, but I haven't been mixing much this month since I got the new(to me anyway) Richard Cheese CD's. 1. I call it a music store and not a record store. (Even though they are also becoming movie stores.)
2. When buying music I say I bought a new CD.
3. When referencing a singer's new release, I say they have a new album out. I will also say, "Hey! I have all of their albums." or "Have you heard their new album? It sucks ass."

Oh yeah, and when I want a soda, I say, I am gonna go get a soda. I used to say, I am gonna get a coke, even if it was root beer or something else.

Because they have new albums out (2 choices, Rocky and Bulwinkle style):

Eve6- "At Least We're Dreaming" or "Good Lives"
Third Eye Blind- "Danger" or "My Hit and Run"
Blur- Whatever Karmattack said (thx for the heads up), I'll get back to you when I get that album.

Because the book wasn't bad either:

Rage Against the Machine- "The Ghost of Tom Joad"

Because he probably hates 50 cent as much as me and here's why:

Del the Funk Homosapien- "Del's Nightmare"

Because it's kind of hard to eat soop without it:

Cibo Matto- "Spoon"

Because I've already recommended over half the band members:

Gorillaz- "Sound Check (Gravity)"

Because it was an awesome Ed Norton Movie:

25th Hour Soundtrack, Liquid Liquid &amp; Grand Master Flash- "Cavern"

Because it was an awesome Chuck Palanhuik book before it was an awesome Ed Norton Movie:

Pixies- "Where is my mind?"

Because Bryan Lynch can bite me:

Esham and Kool Keith- "Dark Vader"

No real theme to speak of, but I doubt you'd take every suggestion, so just a few ideas.

Ween - "Spirit of 76"
Dead Kennedys - "Viva Las Vegas"
Brak's Tales of Suspense

I could never make mixed tapes. I guess I never had a good enough cassette deck, so they always sounded like complete [censored], and I couldn't handle listening to stuff that sounds like crap. With CD players and Burners dropping in price, I don't know why anybody would still use tapes.

I have always thought the exact same thing about "Tahitian Moon." It is damn near impossible to drive the speed limit while that song is playing.

I made a Driving Music Cd for my friend. He listened to it once and said if he gets pulled over, he's just going to hand him the Cd and ask the cop if he could drive the speed limit listening to that music.

I'm going to Colorado in a week and am trying to put together like a folk-country-mountain mix for it -- so far I've got:

"I Shall Be Released", The Band
"Uncle John's Band", Grateful Dead
"Wasted Time", The Eagles
"Mr. Spaceman", The Byrds
"Wooden Ships", Crosby, Stills, and Nash

old, yes -- but it works for me. Any other suggestions?

"Time of Move on" by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers from the Wildflowers album might work.

"I'm The Urban Spaceman" was by the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band, and I think the original recording was produced by Paul McCartney, under psudonym. The member of the band who wrote it, Neil Innes, went on to contribute songs to MONTY PYTHON &amp; THE HOLY GRAIL and was Ron Nasty in THE RUTLES... Innes performed "I'm The Urban Spaceman" on banjo in MONTY PYTHON LIVE AT THE HOLLYWOOD BOWL.

Giving Matt Pinfield a run for his money...

<font color="purple"> Well, I make mixed tapes for my car, because I don't have a cd player in the current car I am driving. Here are some songs I have put on tapes..

'All for Love' Bryan Addams, Sting and Rod Stewart from the three musketeers soundtrack
'When you really loves a woman' Bryan Addams
'Your song' Ewan McGregor from Moulin Rouge
'If I could turn back time' Cher
'The Sweetest Thing' U2
'P.I.M.P' by 50 Cent, snoop the gang
'Regulate' by Nate Dogg and Warren G
'Mo' Money Mo' Problems' Mase, Puffy and Biggie Smalls
'Up!' Shania Twain
'Rocket Man' Elton John
'All That Jazz' 'He Had it Comin' from the Chicago Soundtrack
'Summer Nights' 'Sandy' 'We Go Together' from Grease
'Don't Know Why' by Nora Jones
'Every Step You Take' by the Police
'Material Girl' by Madonna
'Power of Love' By Huey Lewis and the News
'Bump and Grind' by R Kelly

I also like "The Sweetest Thing" by U2. That cover they did on the B-side CD of "Everlasting Love" is darn good fun also.
