Week of March 13, 2006

You can take "The Peacemaker," "Deep Impact," and "The Tuxedo." We'll take "Gladiator," "American Beauty" and anything else that didn't suck.

Emilio's 17

Yeah, like he needed all that overpriced crap anyway...

This lawsuit's going to make 'House Party' look like 'House Party Two!'

I told you... don't call me SENIOR!!

Maybe this is all a bad dream too?

Thanks Sharon, but I think I'll wait until this one comes out on DVD (so I can freeze frame of course)

There is absolutely, positively no nepotism in Hollywood. None.

You're good, baby, I'll give you that... but me? I'm magic.

This band will go down like a lead balloon

Well, Goodbye there Children...

They can't sell the Capitol Records building! What will be left to destroy in the next crappy 'end of the world' movie?

Same old Courtney - still sponging off Kurt

Panic on the streets of Austin

You're a fat, Botox faced, wig-wearing ninny! Oh yeah? Well your band has a dirty H addict as a lead singer!

COMICS 101

By Scott Tipton

February 8, 2006

LO, THERE SHALL COME AN ENDING

Forgive the momentary lapse into Stan Lee-speak above in this week’s headline, but this one truly is a noteworthy occasion, so I couldn’t help myself.

What’s the occasion, you ask? Well, not to put too fine a point on it, but this is my last COMICS 101 column for Movie Poop Shoot. For those of you who may not have read Chris Ryall’s ONE HAND CLAPPING this week, Ryall is stepping down as Editor-in-Chief at the site, and I in turn am giving up my role as Associate Editor and Newswriter.

For more of the details, feel free to check out Ryall’s column. As for me, suffice to say that Chris and I started this trip together some three years and eight months ago, and I’d never dream of working on the site without him. Chris offered me the chance to come in and contribute to what has always been a true partnership in the creation and development of this place, and I’m immensely proud of all we accomplished.

As for the column itself, well, what started off as an experiment in adding some more comics content to the site slowly evolved into my favorite thing to do here, and the staggering amount of feedback I received from comic-book readers new and old was incredibly rewarding.

So rewarding, in fact, that I’m not at all ready to give it up.

This column has become more than I ever thought it could be, giving me the chance to examine, dissect, theorize, postulate, and mostly just blather on about so many of my favorite characters and books. Better than that, it’s become a community in the best sense of the word, as people continue to write in week after to week to disagree, or argue a point, or recommend their own favorite books. I’ve often said that the feedback from readers has been my main motivation for continuing the column, and today’s no different.

Accordingly, starting next week, COMICS 101 (and its sister column, the COMICS 101 MAILBAG) will be appearing right on schedule every Wednesday at its new home at www.comics101.com. Not only that, but a few familiar faces will be joining me at the new digs – namely Chris “ONE HAND CLAPPING” Ryall, Scott “KENTUCKY FRIED RASSLIN’” Bowden and Josh “SQUIB CENTRAL” Jabcuga.

In the meantime, I wanted to take this opportunity to say a final word of gratitude to the Poop Shoot, and to its benefactor, the one and only Kevin Smith. Kevin gave me a platform on which to stick my neck out and spout one fanboy’s two cents about an industry and art form I love, and, more than that, an audience interested in hearing it. So my thanks to you, Kevin, as I turn over my set of keys to the place. I took care of her the best that I could.

Scott Tipton has a bit of a lump in his throat as he turns out the lights behind him. But remember, this isn’t a goodbye. Think of it more as a “new #1,” in comic-book terms. And as always, if you have questions about comics, send ‘em to stipton99x@comics101.com. You’ll just have to go to Comics 101.com for the answers.
