Wow, what a smod to make my first comment on!! You guys definitely should care about the situation between the Israelis and Palestinians. US foreign policy touches the lives of both groups of people, negatively and positively. Billions of US dollars are spent each year in military and economic aid to the players in that dispute. Who you vote for makes a difference in their lives, as it does in many other countries. You don’t have to be an expert, just knowledgable.
Check out the graphic novel Palestine by Joe Sacco. It’s a little dated but worth taking a look at. Keep bring’n the smod. It helps get me through the work week.

Really great smodcast. Though I don’t agree that the document from Noam Chomsky and Mortensen and all those guys reads as anti-Semitic. It’s just anti-Israeli, which is not the same thing. Israel is seriously, for all intents and purposes, the other evil imperialist power in the middle east and they murder people by the droves.

I normally love when you guys are ignorant, but unfortunately you were neither entertaining nor funny this time around guys.
Kevin, one thing that struck me, disagreeing with a country’s actions does not make someone immediately anti semitic, i have many Jewish friends who disagree with Isreal’s foreign policy and its treatment of the Palestinians… so in this instance you have to separate Religion and race from a country’s actions. (also Semites as a “people” include Arabs too)
But what the fuck, it IS FREE, you guys have provided me with countless hours of entertainment, so who am i to complain!
I am bummed you guys will be bringing Smod to a close - its a real shame.

I love Smod and I can usually stomach a little ignorant political discussion, but you cant talk about stuff this important when you admittedly have no understanding of what you are saying. This episode was absolutely cringe worthy, and to be honest I feel less intelligent for simply listening to it. I just cant stand when Kevin tries to talk politics, it is not his area of expertise and he ends up making very unfunny, offensive remarks. I love the Smod but the political discussion needs to stop.

Good to see so many other posters in here are ‘with it’ in regards to the anti-Isreal vs. Antisemitic item. Smodcast listeners are a smart bunch! A point that I just had to make, I admire Chomsky a great deal (Noam Chomsky, one of the signers of the manifesto mentioned herein). He is one of Israel’s major critics, and it should be important to note he is also Jewish. Decrying criticism of Israel as antisemitism is rather ignorant, as there is a distinction between the State and the people.
Also, the idea of Smodcast 99 approaching is enticing… and since Wayne’s just stepped down as coach of the Winnipeg Jets, maybe he’d have some time to fly out to Kev’s and record a Grodcast? Wishful thinking, but I’m sure it’d make Kevin jizz in his pants.

Criticising Israeli foreign policy is NOT anti-semitic, despite what Alan Dershowitz and his ilk might have you believe.
The Israeli occupation of Gaza and the West Bank is ILLEGAL according to international law, UN resolution 242. What’s happening in Israel.
For more information (I see someone already mentioned Chomsky, my idol) look up Norman Finklestein. So powerful is the Israeli propaganda machine that this man was denied tenure at St. Paul university as a result of the efforts of Dershowitz’s efforts and the efforts of other organized Jewish pro-Israeli groups. The irony is that Finklestein himself is Jewish and his mother survived a concentration camp, and yet by criticizing the actions of a sovereign nation in how it treats it’s neighbours he’s been branded a “self-hating Jew” by B’nai Brith, the World Jewish Congress and the Anti-Defamation League, among others.
Israeli is currently operating what is arguably an apartheid state, closing off the West Bank with a fucking wall, penning the Palestinian territory in. They refuse to stop settlers from slowly appropriating land belonging to Palestinians, which is also against international law. Under said law it is illegal to appropriate territory by force of arms, it is illegal to settle occupied territory, which has been going on since then and it is illegal to restrict the movement of the indeginous populace of an occupied territory, all of which has been occuring since the 1967 war when those territories were seized.
These are facts. They are not controversial, nor are they complicated, despite the best efforts of the pro-Israeli propaganda groups. And the moment one tries one is branded an anti-semite.
I reccomend that anyone interested in just exactly how these organizations work read Norman Finklestein’s “The Holocaust Industry”, and for more information about the specifics of Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestine look up “Beyond Chutzpah”.
Really, Kev… fucking disappointing. Next time you want to talk about this kind of thing at least try to understand it, or failing that at least have someone on the show that does understand it. I’ll volunteer, if you want.

These aren’t Jewish-Americans. These are Israelis. I think you’ve been picturing Larry David or Woody Allen trying to chuck gas bombs over a wall and that’s where you get confused.

My first SModCast comment, and I didn’t hear this until nearly a week later, I’m annoyed I never bloody checked it before, hah.
There’s a lot of things I never learned in the history [and various other 'important' events] of the world until I got older [though I'm only 23, so it didn't take me all that long...] so I can understand how they feel around they sound foolish sometimes just because they don’t know things.
The complaints about Kev interrupting all the time - does nobody realise that Mos does it JUST AS MUCH? XD; It’s just their style. They don’t shit on each other, it’s just how they are. They’re friends, they just roll with the converse - but because it’s being recorded for others to hear, so it comes off as douchebaggery.

personally i think it’s refreshing to listen to the opinion of someone who isn’t a self-proclaimed expert for once! often political issues are so crowded with emotions and hidden agendas that it’s often hard to know who’s telling the truth. so it’s a fair bet to remain impartial until you understand the situation. or just adopt a “who gives a fuck” mentality and go about your business. sad reality people- not everyone has the time or motivation to study middle eastern politics. on ya Kev for representing us ignorant masses…

Have you guys ever heard of the Slattery report (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slattery_Report), where the initial proposal was to have an “Israli Homeland” in Alaska? Alaska needed immigraiton and dispossesed Jewish people needed a homeland. Michael Chabron wrote fiction book about it in “The Yidish Policeman’s Union”, which is a murder mystery set in an Alaskan Israel.

Puts a spotlight on the general level of ignorance among the general public about US assistance given to Israel for slaughtering innocents.
This shouldn’t reflect badly on the people of America though, rather the corporate media that fail the public so miserably in what they report to the average Joe who doesn’t do any more than watch the nightly news and buy a daily paper.
This has been highlighted again this week with the disgraceful propaganda machine kicking into action following Iran’s announcement of a second nuclear facility. As usual, the only place to get sensible, impartial, level headed reporting of the facts is from the blogosphere…

I call it the biggest criminal act because no other nation will do anything to stop what’s going on.
The world raized up (or at least spoke out) against other attrocities but not this one because of the influence of jewish politicians and industrial leaders in washington.
I like to think of countries the same way I think of a family.
My country, England, is like the nerdy little brother, smart but phisically not up to much and very unlikely to get laid at the party.
America is the total opposite, their the dumbass jock, big and strong but not exactly going to win the science fair any time soon.
The saddest member of the family is Israel.

With the backing of US supplied planes, tanks, and nukes Israel indiscriminately expands settlements passed the 1967 established border into Palestinian territories. In many cased plow, (literally) bull dose Palestinian homes in the way. The Palestinians out of desperation resort to fighting back with the most low tech ways imaginable. The US blindly supports Israel when the majority of the UN often calls attention to inequities.
We as Americans do need to dig and try to gain perspective and understand this key reason the Muslim community fells animosity toward our Country. Bin Laden’s video released after 9-11 highlighted the US supported Isreal/Palistinian conflict as the main reason for the attack. Within a few days after the video aired the US media stopped showing the complete video. Our media only covers the blood spilled when Israel is attacked. Both Palestinians and Israelis are intolerant fundamentalists thinkers making them both unreasonable in my book. I had to chime in because the quickstop link is really one sided.

Just throwing in my two cents; I do think that most of this Smod was a little too dry and political, and certainly not very informed. On the other hand, I thought it ended on a high note (pun intended) and the idea of Scott becoming a dedicated follower of the Nordic religion (’That was because of Loki, man!’) is hysterical.
Not to mention, it IS free, and as was pointed out above, Smodcasts are conversations between friends that are usually very entertaining. If some are less so, that’s just the nature of the beast.

I think the point of banning the Toronto Film Fest was in regards to the fact that the Film Fest was being used to promote the political aspirations of a state…I think that is what is important about the boycott…not the fact that it was israel. Anytime that film is being used to further politics it is appropriate for film makers to comment or respond.

Kev and Scott, I love the movies and SModcasts and know that your hearts are in the right place and all that, but holy jumping jesus on a pogo stick how fucking bone ignorant clueless can two people be? I’m not saying everyone should be a Renaissance man with multiple Phds or anything like that, but would it kill you to read a fucking newspaper once in while or turn the news? You don’t have to be a Jeopardy champ, but you owe it to yourselves to have some basic general knowledge of the world around you. Simple historical literacy would be a start.
And don’t give this “well it doesn’t personally affect me, so I don’t care about it” bullshit. You think 9/11 happened because Americans were too well-informed about the history of the middle east? Everything is connected to everything else eventually and just because you entertain for a living doesn’t mean it isn’t useful to know some shit about something other than Star Wars, the Oilers and Batman.
You’re movie guys - at least go rent “Exodus” before you start talking about the middle east. Being ignorant is not something to be proud of or something you should be defending. “Idiocracy” wasn’t meant to be a documentary.

The Red Bank show was fantastic. Mosier was funnier than I had aver heard him and of course Kevin was great. The meet and greet after was great and they personaly signed the books to myself and my wife. Cant wait for this to happen again!!!

This is the first time I comment on smodcast even though I have been a fan for what seems like a long time. I would just like to say that strangely enough I got kind of proud of being a Swede. We usualy dont feel wery proud of ourselfs and dont have a grate sense of patriotism. I guess that Is one of the ways that we actually are more progressive. The funny or parodoxical thing about that though is that the avrage Swede feels a kind of pride in the fact that we dont feel any national pride.
Anyway, thank you for doing Smod and an agnostic blessing from Sweden.

At the best of times it’s a tough journey because you’re trying not to look in to the eyes of the people squashing in to you…but avoiding eye contact whilst laughing in their faces makes it tough and it makes them angry :<

Ok, I promised myself I wasn’t going to sound like a bitchy internet douchebag here, so I’ll do my best.
I love SModcast. I’ve listened to every episode, many of them multiple times, and I have never once been offended by an episode. This latest one really pushed me to the edge, and while I really did try to just let it slide, I kind of couldn’t, as a self-respecting guy, not say anything.
I am an Asatruar. Yes, I worship the Scandinavian gods, including Thor, Odin, Freyja, etc. There are about a million of us worldwide, and I feel like I should at the very least bring this to people’s attention. I realize Kevin didn’t set out to piss anyone off and it was only general ignorance that sparked his comments, but all the same, he said a lot of things that just plain would not fly if you were saying them about any more mainstream and/or “Accepted” world religion. A lot of the Hindu gods are, to most westernized people, strange-seeming (probably more so even than the Norse gods), but if you went around joking about it and calling Hindu “The Most Embarassing Religion in the World,” you’d start a riot.
Anyway, I just kind of needed to put that out there on the behalf of myself and my co-believers worldwide. I’d have tremendous respect for Kevin if he’d be so kind as to issue an apology of some kind either in audio or text form, but I’m not going to cry out for his blood if he doesn’t. It’s enough that he at least knows that he upset some people and should maybe be more careful about saying things like that in the future.
So that’s it. Not here to stir up shit or anything, and I didn’t mean to come across as hostile in any part of what I wrote.

OK, just my two cents, cause i see there are some people saying some interesting things on the comments.
I think people are jumping down kev’s throat a bit too much here. he learned about this stuff the DAY before he recorded this–and acknowleged as much in the episode! He specifically said that he is just giving his first thoughts on the topic, and that he needs to learn more to make a valid opinion. Thats exactly what I love about kev and scott and smod in general–they arn’t afraid to say what they are thinking, even if it is sort of ignorant. The important thing is that they KNOW its ignorant, which they do. Really, he does need to learn more before making this his real view in the mater, but luckily he has tim, yeah?
I respect him for giving these thoughts, and acknowleging that he needs to learn more. its totally understandable that he would think this after only hearing the begining of the story.

Religion is an outdated construct that people invented to boost themselves to power and create fear so they could control the population. Scott’s solution for solving all problems created via religion (”Stop believing in it”) is so simple and yet so TRUE. The citizens of the world need to stop killing each other over silly trifles and imaginary friends.

Expecting an apology because you are offended about what someone says about your religious choices is about as plausable as expecting an apology if you get offended because of what someone says about which political party you belong to. Although I understand the core of the argument–and what I’m trying to say is that, in this specific case, I don’t think Kevin would have said what he did if he knew there were people out there that actually believe that. He’s a really tolerant, open-minded guy, and I wanted to hopefully make him aware of the fact that he may have seriously upset some people because it seems like something he’d actually care about and want to apologize for.

Wow. For something nobody asked you to listen to, people are getting rather heated. I belive there has been close to an hour long discussion about Scott ole-timey boxing an eye-beam shooting Jesus and questions about the Holy Afterbirth. Just saying I think Christianity is just about as mainstream as it gets based on popularity. None of this really matters anyways, but don’t expect to get anything but more smodcast, they don’t owe anybody any kind of appology for anything. Don’t like it, don’t listen.

It’s true Kev and Scott bash on religion a lot, but for one thing it’s different for a Catholic to bash Catholocism, and for another thing, they’ve never directly insulted the followers of any particular religion- they just talk about how silly the religion itself is, which I agree, pretty much every religion is kinda silly. Even mine, but I have good reasons for choosing it.
Anyway, I’ll clarify once again that I don’t really care what anyone thinks. If you’re reading this and you’re an athiest and you don’t mind telling every religious person in the world is fucking stupid and should die in a fire…. you’re entitled to that opinion. But I’m not talking about you. I’m talking about Kevin, who I think would actually feel bad about what he said if he had the information I have presented.

On second thought, the above comment about calling religions silly vs bashing their followers isn’t exactly what I was going for, I kind of contradicted myself.
Let me just leave it at this: Knowing what we know about Kevin as a person from almost 100 SModcasts, let’s present a hypothetical scenario. If Kevin for some reason thought that Hinduism were a dead religion and spoke about it in a way that was ignorant and overall offensive to its followers, then found out that it’s actually one of the most popular religions in the world, don’t you think he’d want to aplogize? Remember, not talking about anyone else’s personal views- just our favorite podcast host. You can plug in pretty much any other “accepted” religion in there. Islam, Shintoh, Buddhism… I can’t imagine that he wouldn’t feel bad about it, and all I’m saying is that Asatruar should get the same treatment.
Of course if Kevin did just come out and say “No, I’m not sorry, you guys are all fucking crazy beleiving in your fake-ass storybook gods, fuck you,” I’d be surprised, but I’d accept that. It just doesn’t sound like him.

Just wanted to tell you, although not many people believe in the nordic gods. There are some people here in iceland who still believe in them and icelandic people also honor their traditions and stuff. I would also like to let you know that “the bible” for ásatrú is called Snorra-Edda. And it’s an book believed to be written around 1200(odd since Icelandic people took up christianity 200 years before that). But anyway, just wanted to let you know.
