SModcast is the meandering palaver of a pair of dudes whose voices are so dull, they don’t deserve to be on the radio (and, hence, aren’t). Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier are SModcast.
The best thing about SModcast? It don’t cost nothing.

SModcast 48: Massholes -
In which our heroes talk about that old time religion, ruminate on the clerical touch, and try to discern the role of the hot tub in Holy Mother Church.
[CONTENT WARNING] SModcast features harsh language and even harsher notions of propriety. Listener discretion is advised.

Two quick notes from a former Catholic educator;
Priests were allowed to marry in the early church, but the issue was that priests become bishops, and bishops personally owned all of the property in a diocees. As per European tradition, when a man dies all of his property is trandfered to his oldest male son. After an avalache of inheritence suits brought against the church, the decision was made to enforce celebacy on the clergy.
Also, a quick aside, the apostles with books named after them (Mathew, Mark, Luke, and John) did not write the books that carry their name, but rather it’s thought that their respective deciples wrote them generations after the deaths of the deciples based on the oral teachings passed down in their name.
Great show, and I’m very excited about Zach and Miri and Red State. Thank you.

Kevin,
I’d be fascinated to hear your take on the environment in Utah. To Mormons, masturbation is as bas as if not worse than premarital sex. If you walk around the BYU campus, you’ll feel a palpable sexual tension. It’s thick in the air. Their hormones are raging and they are denying themselves that release. There is definitely a percentage of that schools population that is not having sex, nor are they masturbating. You can tell because the guys are tense, hyper, and as you say, “like a coiled snake.” Also, you’ll find girls who’s only experience with touching themselves is when the put in a tampon. I know Mormon girls who’s sexual tension is so built up that putting in a tampon gives them an orgasm. I know Mormon girls who have never seen a penis and don’t know what one looks like, nor do they know how it works. I actually had a Mormon girl ask me, “What parts go in me? Do the balls go in me?” Go take a trip to BYU… you’ll just have to shave your beard or wear some sort of disguise (no beards allowed on campus).

The John who wrote the Gospel is different from the John in the Gospel. Just fyi. I guess I actually remember something from my Jesuit education.
May 5th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

May 5th, 2008 at 10:24 pm
It was…educational. I’m like your wife Kevin, except I believe I’m more agnostic that athiest. But I don’t believe in a set god. :]
I learned once again from a SModcast. :]
May 5th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Kevin,
Based on the things you’d like to see changed in the Catholic Church, it sounds like you want to go Protestant.
May 5th, 2008 at 11:50 pm
Thanks for the new Smodcast guys! Keep it up
May 6th, 2008 at 12:33 am
“I’m gonna jerk off wearing this collar; it’s gonna be hot.”
Classic SMod.
Keep ‘em coming (pun intended).
May 6th, 2008 at 12:58 am
i was also raised catholic. and most of my classes were taught by nuns. although i miss the comfort of being christian sometimes, and i try to believe that i am, if i’m really honest with myself i’d have to say i’m agnostic. i think it was Thomas Payne who said, “the mind once enlightened cannont again become dark.” i don’t know that it’s possible to truly go back to christianity once u realize that your an agnostic, to me it’s akin to trying to believe in santa claus again once you realize he’s not real…..as much as u try to tell yourself, you know it’s not true. any thoughts on this guys and gals?
May 6th, 2008 at 2:03 am
i think this board is not the place for religious debates.
May 6th, 2008 at 6:36 am
Wait, Steve, Santa Clause isn’t real? Way to ruin it for me asshole.
May 6th, 2008 at 7:48 am
A catholic priest told me once that if a BJ is part of four play it is ok, but if it is used to replace sex it is a sin.
May 6th, 2008 at 8:25 am
Regardless of your faith or lack there of, there is no such thing as a Catholic child (or a Muslim child or a Buddhist child, etc) especially in America where religious beliefs are not entirely (explicitly) enmeshed in political or cultural contexts. I am Buddhist, studying at a Divinity school right now, and let me tell you, Harley will be much better off if, instead of forcing a faith on her, when she is old enough you let her examine them herself to see if she feels comfortable in any of them.
As long as religious and spiritual identity is not kept away from her, hidden like something entirely “other” and unspeakable, I wouldn’t worry about an “unhealthy” (religiously obsessed) backlash. Just give her the space to willfully experiment and choose, without the heavy hand most religions, Catholicism being one of the best at this, assert themselves with…

Kevin:
This was my first SModcast, and I enjoyed it a lot. Been watching all your movies one after the other.
However, what’s with the smoking, I thought you quit in 2005?! Click, click, click with the lighter…. Or is that Scott?
I smoked 20 years and quit five years ago. You can quit.
Yours, a clueless newbie,
Al

cudose to you
May 6th, 2008 at 8:09 pm
Kevin should become a Decon who is like a priest that can get married.
May 6th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Good Smodcast. Kinda sad how people judge Christianity on the wrong of the Catholic Church and Televangelists. The world is a different place now days and I think most churches need to get with the program.
May 7th, 2008 at 1:59 am
That was one of the best SModcasts yet, seriously. Funny shit and interesting.
I thought it hilarious to no end, though Kevin, how you came right back to your original point from the beginning, tying the big bow, unintentionally. It reminds me of an outstanding Weird Al song called “Albequerque” that’s 20mins+ of bizzare storytelling that wraps up nicely. Download it, even if you’re not a huge fan, it’s awesome.
The questions of what sex is a sin reminded me of this site: http://www.sexinchrist.com/

Hello from blighty!
Great as always,
Just one thing dudes - Its not the same john who writes the gospel of john and the revelations marlarky. (im a non- practicing catholic and also a former altar boy, whom like billions of former altar boys, wasnt abused unless ive blocked it from my memory)
Its the other John (saul of tarsus) that writes revelations (suposedly). Yes thats right the apostle who never met jesus in the flesh, The one who persercuted christians, then one day while walking fell over, and was “visited” by jesus, He then went on a campaign of unifying the various religious factions of followers of christ, by killing them…. im sure you could spend weeks debating this guy on sm-cast
If you dont know much about him, do some research into him you’ll be amazed at this guy
May 7th, 2008 at 5:51 am
hey name of the song and singer at the intro?
May 7th, 2008 at 7:51 am
Latest “Anonymous”: Er, you’re way, way off there. Yikes.
May 7th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
I will never become a priest. I love pussy way too much.
Smodcast is always awesome. It makes me laugh. You guys do an awesome job. Thanks again for another great episode.

It’s not well known, but in some circumstances the Catholic church does allow priests to marry and to have children.
If a man who is already married and already has children decides he has received the “calling” to become a priest, then can do so. The Catholic Church is desperate to increase the number of priests, and so will allow these cases.
But the man must still meet all the other requirements of priesthood (vow of poverty, etc). They remain married (because divorce is not permitted).
Some priests can also avoid the “poverty” problem. One of the priests at my church came from a wealthy family. He gave up his own personal wealth, but the family still owned some nice property which they let him live in, so he had a fairly comfortable life. (I don’t know if he had a hot tub.)
Oh, BTW, re: last week’s Smodcast - Kevin took a dump in Ben Affleck’s shower!!? That’s fucked up.
May 8th, 2008 at 6:07 pm
Who was the artis they played at the begining and end of the smod cast? I have been into british chic pop latley and would love to know who that is.

Kevin and Scott,
The animator Brad Neely did a sketch on the idea of the Gospels being written not by jesus but by his disciples,
don’t know if you saw it yet, find it here on the superdeluxe comedy site http://www.superdeluxe.com/sd/contentDetail.do?id=D81F2344BF5AC7BBBD38674A8E7DFA7B8FE5B94EE9697AAD
just thought ye might find it funnyx
May 9th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
The Chastity thing for priest was started by the Catholic Church for monetary reasons. They didn’t want priests who owned vast amounts of land and had amassed great wealth passing on their land and wealth to their children, but rather wanted it to be left to the Church when they died. Before this was enacted priests could marry and have children.
Chastity was a cheap ploy for more money. clever….
I saw Deliver Us From Evil.
That shit was SO depressing. That Irish asshole molested about 50 kids, and was never prosecuted. They just sent him off to Ireland. Motherfucker…
Great Smodcast, Sirs.
May 9th, 2008 at 3:31 pm
Mormon clergy are lay clergy…members of the ward (congregation) who are called to serve for a time as clergy. They still have regular jobs, kids, wives etc. The young guys you see around with the Mormon badges on are missionaries, not clergyman. They serve for two years and get to go home and raise a family.
Love your show!
May 9th, 2008 at 10:51 pm
there is going to be a Donnie Darko sequel. Kevin, i have always figured you to be a big cult movie guy, this must come as an outrage to you aswell
May 10th, 2008 at 7:28 pm

May 10th, 2008 at 7:44 pm

So like I’m in AU and I love your stoner opinions on the world. Especially the Incest that went on a couple of weeks ago in Australia
You guys are actually pretty funny
May 11th, 2008 at 10:33 pm
I hope people don’t get the idea from this Smodcast that clerical abuse is some laughing matter or that it was all some creepy but harmless thing. I experienced violent abuse at the hands of a priest and it left me with permanent brain damage, chronic health problems and depression. I can say without reservation that it ruined my life. How anyone can attend a Catholic Church knowing that the Pope himself covered up the widespread abuse is beyond me. And just to dispel a myth I didn’t sue, so I’m not just saying this to get money from the Church. There were HUNDREDS of priests involved in this in the Diocese I grew up in so anyone saying it’s all a media hatchet job against the Church has it exactly backwards.
May 12th, 2008 at 12:00 am
Please, I need some SMod
May 12th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
instead of abandoning God and your beliefs just don’t go to a CATHOLIC CHURCH… go to a CHRISTIAN CHURCH that may be non-denominational
sheesh
May 12th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
Great Smodcast…really lik the idea of Kevin being a priest i would go to church every week, but whats da song in the beginning and end?
August 25th, 2008 at 12:45 pm
what is the piece of music playing at the beginning of this smodcast?
very groovy stuff….
thanks
August 27th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
“Pump my a$$ full of Jeasus!” I was laughing out loud at work today thanks to you guys. You were refering to getting spiritually fulfilled at church, but considering you were talking about anal sex only moments before… LOL
I just found the podcast a couple of weeks ago, and I have been trying to catch up from the beginning. Much better to do it that way than to start from the current episode! I get a lot more of the inside jokes.
keep it up, and have a week.
James

What’s the song towards the end of the podcast with the chorus singing hallelujah over and over again?
